I recently got together with Chris Kopp, CEO and Director or Research & Development for CTOMS. Chris’s experiences and lessons learned in the Canadian Forces led him to start CTOMS in an effort to develop better combat casualty training and equipment for his fellow soldiers, and others who may benefit from it. Since I have no tactical medicine knowledge or insight, I wrote the above review of the CTOMS 2ndline Pack System from a very general point of view (please refer to it for details on the components of the CTOMS 2ndline pack system). However, I felt that it would be beneficial to ask Chris to share some of the design philosophy behind the pack system, what he carries in his, and how he sets it up. He offered to send his pack down so I could take a look at it and snap some photos, but we decided to wait until we could get together in person and go through it.

ITW Military Products has two new buckles – the Waveloc male side release buckle, which prevents/reduces webbing slippage, and the other is a Quick Attach Surface Mount female buckle. I’m particularly excited about the Quick Attach Surface mount, as this opens up a whole lot of new possibilities.

TAD Gear has released their latest (2009) generation of their popular Force 10 Cargo Utilities in 100% cotton ripstop, with the addition of hypalon reinforcements on the knees and knife clip pocket patches. The new model is called the ‘Rip Stop H’. Another update is that everything is colour matched, including the zipper, Canadian style slotted buttons and other hardware.

The BAD-T1/’The Armorer’ from Battle Arms Development (B.A.D.) is an ingeniously-designed, unique multi-purpose tool and precision ordnance gauge designed for the M1A/M-14 type rifle, and the M1 Garand. The Armorer is comprised of several multi-function components that can be assembled into different configurations to perform more than 30 weapon-specific functions. It isn’t a general multi-use tool, but one with specialized functions unique to the M1A family of weapons, that replaces a host of weapon-specific tools. This is the first time M14 gauges and tools have been combined into one multi-functional tool, which should make M1A owners, armorers and enthusiasts very excited.
