The Drac Jacket from Arc’teryx’s LEAF division is a soft shell jacket available in their newest colourway – Urban Wolf. Urban Wolf is a medium-grey tone intended for modern urban/industrial environments.
It was only a matter of time before RailRiders introduced their short version of their popular Versatac pants. Due to the overwhelming success of the Versatac pants, RR expanded the line to include shorts. Like the pants, the Versatac shorts are available in both Light and Mid weight versions. While the shorts share many of the same features as the pants, they aren’t simply the pant version chopped off at the knee – there are some differences between them.
One of TAD Gear’s latest releases is a softshell version of their popular Force 10 Cargo Utilities; the Force 10 Softshell Utility Cargos. Following a similar format to their Force 10′s, the Softshell offers the same utility in a more streamlined package; taking advantage of the stretch material properties, while offering near water-proof protection against the wet.
Triple Aught Design’s (TAD Gear) longest running softshell, the Stealth Hoodie, has been updated for Fall 2009. The new version is called the Stealth Hoodie Reloaded. Significant changes in design and construction have been implemented on the ‘Reloaded’, making it the most advanced Stealth Hoodie yet. The Reloaded uses the new 3-layer waterproof Shark Skin Soft Shell fabric in the heavier ‘classic’ weight, with a quieter smooth face and technical fleece inner lining.
TAD Gear has released their latest (2009) generation of their popular Force 10 Cargo Utilities in 100% cotton ripstop, with the addition of hypalon reinforcements on the knees and knife clip pocket patches. The new model is called the ‘Rip Stop H’. Another update is that everything is colour matched, including the zipper, Canadian style slotted buttons and other hardware.
The Action Polo from VERTX is a polo shirt designed for the professional that sets itself apart from the rest by utilizing coldblack® technology that reflects up to 80% of the sun’s rays making dark colours feel like light ones. As a result, you stay cooler in hot, sunny conditions with protection from harmful UV rays with a minimum of UPF 30.
The VertX Tactical Pant is now in production and available; and I’m pleasantly surprised to see it offered at a very competitive price.
Just in time for the rest of summer, the Rocket World Force 10 Spartan Shorts from TAD Gear are the short version of their Spartan Pants with some newly incorporated features. Like the Spartan Pants, the Spartan Shorts are sans side cargo pockets, which result in a more streamlined version of the Force 10 Cargo Shorts.
This is the CBDU (Contractor BDU) from EMDOM USA. It’s a limited-run custom modified BDU shirt and pant that was originally designed as an enhanced BDU for private military contractors, or anyone else that can make use of its practical features.
This project actually started in December 2006, when Ken from EMDOM asked me if I had any ideas for modified BDUs. ‘Custom/enhanced’ BDUs have become more commonplace now; back then all you had were BDUs that you took to the tailor to modify. Most of the BDUs were geared towards the military; less so for the civilian or PMC. Since PMCs can’t wear camouflage, and some civvies dislike wearing camo to tactical classes etc, there were some modifications that I had in mind that I thought would be practical, and that I could make use of on the range while running around. So, while these BDUs can be worn by anyone who can use its features, we always referred to them as the ‘Contractor BDUs’, so the name stuck. The main goal was to provide practicality, additional elbow and knee protection, comfort and load bearing capability over the standard BDU without a noticeable increase in weight.
Gear has introduced a new softshell, called the DK Jacket. Designed for movement-intensive operations and activities, it’s a hoodless softshell that includes the ability to roll up the sleeves to convert it to short-sleeved configuration. The DK is not just a hoodless version of OTTE’s Alpine Jacket, but a completely different cut.
