    MagLULA Magazine Loaders

    August 29th

Many shooters are already familiar with Maglula Ltd., and their innovative magazine loaders. I’ve been using one for my AR15 for a number of years. Their newest offering is the StripLULA, which loads M16/AR15 magazines using stripper clips or loose rounds. I’ll also cover some of their LULA models for other weapons in this writeup, including the UpLULA for pistols.

‘Ghetto’ pistol mag loader modification for BDM .22lr magazines

    August 3rd

As 5.56mm ammunition prices have more than doubled over the past couple of years like the price of gas, and don’t seem to be going down anytime soon, I’ve been shooting a dedicated .22lr upper on my AR-15 lowers for plinking, close-range (less than 25 yards) drills and practice, and just plain fun. I use the BDM (Black Dog Machine) magazine. It holds 27 rounds of .22lr and comes in skinny and full size. I use the full size which looks like a regular 30-round magazine and fits into 30-round mag pouches. My only gripe with the BDM mag is that it’s hard to load, once you get past 15 round or so. You have to push each round down with the one you’re trying to insert, and it’s not easy with the curvature of the .22lr case. The result: sore and tired fingers. So I made my own ‘Ghetto’ thumb loader.

EMDOM USA/MM Ammo SAC (Soft Ammo Can)

    June 25th

Here’s the next accessory for shooters that I’ve come up with, in collaboration with EMDOM USA. Are you tired of bringing your loose ammo to the range in ratty plastic or mesh bags, tearing at the seams with rounds falling out of splitting sides and open tops? Do you wish ammo cans were lighter and didn’t take up space when empty? Do you hate the noise ammo cans make when they’re half full and fall over when you’re turning in the car? Do you wish ammo can handles were more comfortable to carry? Well, I’ve got the solution for you - the EMDOM USA/MM Ammo SAC (Soft Ammo Can).

    Lancer Systems L5 Translucent Magazine

    April 27th

Prior to the ‘08 SHOT show in February, I saw previews of Lancer Systems’ L5 translucent 30 round magazine. When I was at SHOT, I met Greg from Lancer at the SKD Tactical booth, and he handed me a couple to try out. The L5 is a translucent 30 round magazine developed for the 5.56mm M16/M4/AR15 rifle. It has an impact resistant translucent polymer body in a smoke grey tint, corrosion resistant steel feed lips and a removable rubber coated bottom floor plate. The L5 was designed to be used with the existing magazine pouches and carriers.

    Magpul Industries PMag Ranger Plate

    April 17th

Ranger Plates for Magpul’s PMags are finally out, in Black and OD at the time of this writing. These are similar to the Ranger Plates for the USGI mags and are a direct replacement for the PMag floorplate. All you do is remove your original PMag floorplate and slip this one on. It will not work with any magazines other than Magpul’s PMag.

    ITW/Down East Inc FASTmag

    March 24th

Back in June of ‘07, I got a heads up from Justin at Down East Inc, of a Marine Corps solicitation for their ILBE pouches. One of these was for a 30-round M16/M4 Speed Reload pouch. The product developed by Down East Inc and marketed primarily by ITW Military Products was the FASTmag. However, I didn’t like it that much as I felt that it was too wide and bulky. I voiced my concerns, and Justin told me that they were already working on a revised product that addressed those issues. I decided not to do a writeup on the Gen 1 FASTmag and instead wait for the improved version. Fast forward a few months, and the Gen 2 FASTmag was debuted around the time of the ‘08 SHOT Show in February. The Gen 2 FASTmag is indeed a great improvement over the first version, and worth the wait.

    SLiP2000 Brush Buddy

    March 16th

I love to shoot, and know lots of others who do. And if you shoot, you clean your weapons, sometime or other. Sure, some people don’t, but that’s not me. For those weapons I don’t shoot often, I clean them pretty thoroughly. For the weapons I shoot most often, I just do a quick cleaning between sessions. Either way, I get tired of cleaning the bore (even with the bore snake). For this task, SLiP2000 has come up with a simple device that makes the chore of cleaning a little bit easier - the Brush Buddy. It eliminates the need to screw and unscrew the cleaning tools on the end of a cleaning rod.

    Vltor SM-OCG Light Mount

    March 1st

The Vltor SM-OCG (Scout Mount - Offset Classic G-series) light mount debuted at the ‘08 SHOT Show at the beginning of February. This neat little offset light mount is able to accomodate both 1″ diameter lights and the larger G2 Nitrolon (approx 1.040″). Like he did for the Scout mount, Eric Kincel came up with an innovative clamping system (patent pending) that tightens down on both the rail and the light body at the same time, even if the light body diameter changes. This elminates the need for two mount sizes.
